SmartLynx delayed baggage compensation.
How much can you claim? What are the rules?
Air travel is convenient, but it can also be challenging when faced with certain issues. Waiting at the airport for your baggage can be quite frustrating, especially when you discover it’s gone missing. This is a common issue in air travel, as baggage can sometimes get lost or not make it onto your connecting flight as intended. In such a situation, it’s crucial to act promptly by reporting the loss of your bag.
Read on to find out more about what to do if your baggage is delayed.
What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost or Delayed?
What happens when your baggage is delayed or lost?
Your first step should be to report the delayed/lost baggage at the airport.
If your baggage is delayed, let the representative at the baggage claim area know immediately. To report your missing bag, you’ll need your passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag (usually attached to your boarding pass during check-in). Including a picture of your suitcase or any additional information can help speed up the process.
You will be given a Property Irregularity Report or PIR by the representative. This report includes a personal reference number that you can use to track your baggage. Keep this document safe.
In most cases, missing baggage is typically located within the first 24 hours. Once your bag is found, the airline will reach out to you to schedule a suitable delivery time.
Tracking Your Lost Luggage
How to check delayed baggage status?
You will receive a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with a reference number.
Keep this number safe as it is crucial for tracking lost baggage.
To track the status of your missing bag, you can use the SmartLynx online tracking system for baggage. The customer service representatives will explain how to use this system when you report your missing bag.
Make sure to input your name and PIR to track the progress. Don’t confuse the number on your baggage tag with your PIR number.

Are you entitled to SmartLynx delayed baggage compensation?
Baggage Delayed For a Few Days
It’s essential to note that in most instances, baggage is located and delivered within 24-72 hours.
To monitor the status of your baggage online, you can make use of the World Tracer Tool and provide the PIR (Property Irregularity Report) number. This tool offers a convenient way to keep tabs on your bag’s progress throughout the process.
Reimbursement of Expenses
Remember that compensation for delayed baggage means covering expenses incurred due to baggage delay.
It’s important to remember that SmartLynx will cover the costs for essential items such as toiletries and necessary clothing if your baggage is lost or delayed. Be sure to save all receipts from these purchases, as they will be needed when you file a claim.
Only purchases of essential items will be reimbursed.
Your claim should be submitted within 21 days from the date you receive your delayed baggage.
This reimbursement is often called “delayed baggage compensation”.
Baggage Is Lost (Lost Baggage Compensation Is Available)
SmartLynx has 21 days to track and return your missing bag.
If your baggage is not found within 21 days, it is officially declared lost. At this point, you can file a claim for SmartLynx lost baggage compensation. You are entitled to a maximum compensation of €1300.
Always remember that it’s not recommended to pack electronics, artwork, jewellery, and similar items in checked luggage. This is because SmartLynx (or any other airline) is not obligated to reimburse the full value of these items, but only up to the limit specified by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.
When submitting a claim, you will need to provide your boarding pass, baggage tags, and the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with your reference number. If you incurred additional costs while waiting for your luggage, you can file a claim by submitting receipts for your expenses.
Is Travel Insurance Necessary?
Is travel insurance a must?
Although insurance proof is not required when filing a claim for SmartLynx delayed baggage compensation, it’s always a good idea to secure travel insurance prior to your trip.
Travel insurance could be a lifesaver in unexpected situations, potentially making your journey smoother. Moreover, certain travel insurance plans are quite affordable. So, it’s a good idea to consider availing travel insurance or opting for a travel credit/debit card that offers insurance as a perk.
If your baggage is lost or delayed, and it’s not your fault, your insurance policy may cover the cost of necessary purchases. This could be easier than dealing directly with the airline.
Make sure to contact your insurer before making any purchases and keep all your receipts. Without receipts, it’s unlikely you’ll get a refund. Also, remember to ask about the details of your policy, including coverage for delayed baggage.
Travel Prepared
How can you prepare for possible baggage loss or delay?
A smart idea is to pack an extra set of clothes and underwear in your carry-on. This is especially important for tropical destinations where appropriate attire and swimwear are required.
It’s also wise to pack medications and high-value items in your hand luggage as a preventive measure in the event of misplacement of your checked-in baggage.
